A tricky question really, at the end of the day, photography is like anything else. Finding a photographer in Hawaii is finding someone you trust.

Good work ain’t cheap and cheap work ain’t good.

So really your Hawaii photographer can be as expensive or affordable as the quality of the results you’re looking for.

On average, you can find a couple’s photographer starting at $250 all the way up to $800 per hour.

Weddings and Elopements range higher, given the difference in service. Photographers range at $500-$700 per hour at the lowest all the way to $1,500 per hour. However, in my honest opinion, price shouldn’t be the only thing to consider when hiring a photographer in Hawaii.

Are photographers more expensive on average in Hawaii than anywhere else in the world? Probably. It’s something I lovingly like to call the paradise tax. With the cost of living being much higher here for us locals, we do have to compensate with our pricing.

5 IMPORTANT THINGS TO CONSIDER APART FROM PRICE:

1. For one, pick a photographer that fits your style, and your vision. Photographers are a lot more than just pushing a button on their camera – it’s also the way they edit their photos. Which can vary very drastically. Some are bright and airy, very colorful or warm and moody. So make sure to check out their portfolio so that you know what to expect your photos to look like
2. Talking about portfolios, make sure to check the “professionalism” of your photographer. Do they have full session/wedding/elopement galleries? Is their editing consistent throughout different kinds of lighting and location?
3. A solid photographer is also one that is there to advise you. Whether that be to guide you through poses and prompts so you don’t feel awkward in front of the camera. What about helping you pick the best time of day to shoot so you can have the best light, avoid traffic, etc. And as most people hiring a photographer in Hawaii, are tourists here on vacation, your photographer should be there to help you pick the best location for the perfect photos.
4. You get what you pay for. For some photographers, their rate per hour might be low but everything is an extra add-on. Travel fees, limited gallery, having to pay for extra photos, gallery downloads, consultation fees, limited help and availability, lower equipment quality .. you get it. OR – you can also opt to pay more and have more of a luxurious experience. Unlimited consolations, everything included and no limitations. So make sure to ask your photographer what is included in their rates (amount of photos delivered per hour, travel, ext ..)
5. INSURANCE + PERMITS. Two very important things, for both you and your photographer alike. Permits can be sorted out by either parties – however, I highly recommend making sure your Hawaii photographer has some sort of insurance policy.
